a mystery solved

NYC is a big city, ten million people in one place, a street photographer’s paradise.  You could probably walk a new street every day for a lifetime.  That is why it is an especially sweet moment of serendipity when someone walks into your frame on more than one occasion over the years.   Certain NY “characters” are easy to find,  they have their haunts, their stages, but this is different.

The first time I happened upon “the sad clown rabbit man” I saw him coming from way down the street.  I positioned myself and waited for him to pass by the kool-aid smile.

At the time I thought it was a once in a lifetime encounter with a man headed to a costume party, so when almost two years later I ran into “sad rabbit”  as I had dubbed him,  I was thrilled.

But again,  I chalked it up to a chance encounter.  The mystery of who he was still remained.  Flash forward a year and once again the city delivers,  this time in a big way.  A few weeks ago I got a comment on the above image.

Clown ToTo had found himself online.

So now I had a name and a link to a facebook page,  a huge piece of the story.  Clown ToTo is a professional clown with a long list of credits, the rabbit being just one of his wonderful characters.  It wasn’t hardly a week later when I happened upon him in Times Square and shot the following series.  The light, perfect!  I even got the nerve to go up and exchange cards.  Clown ToTo these are for you!

  1. Fabulous shots and more fabulous serendipity. I can see why you love NYC – surely a photographer’s playroom.
