summer’s last gasp…

That fake period of time known as “summer”  (memorial day to labor day) has once again come to an end.  Why do I say fake, well the weather in NYC today says it all.  Real Summer has much more in store and wearing white wouldn’t be the worst sin the next few weeks.

Fake summer and all out of the way.  How to celebrate the end?  a NYC tradition, a street fair!

Yesterday (labor day) 30th Avenue in Astoria set the stage for that last gasp, last bit of fun.  One more memory to tuck into a corner before school, work, grey, rain, wind and eventually ice, snow and sludge creep in.  I conveniently left out that wonderful crisp autumn stuff because it seems to only stick around for a day or two… never quite enough.

What to expect from a NYC street fair?  Well, there are a few certains and many surprises.

Who’s your daddy being one of the surprises…(for some I am sure this is a literal truth)

There will be dogs… that is one of the certains, there are always dogs,  in this case both real and fluffy.

There will be junk  * some one else’s treasures*

And crafts..if lucky sometimes the crafts actually elevate to the level of art.

Food,  food from everywhere for every taste.

The big winner in this line up,  the spinning meat.  I wasn’t the only one that stood mesmerized by the rotating tower of grilling meat.

And of course there are people, so many wonderful people out and about.

So, next time then…

taking the 5th on easter…

As promised,  here comes a bunch of photos from the Easter Bonnet Parade on 5th Avenue in New York City (forever more known as NYC as I am tired of typing out the whole thing, I pride myself on my selective laziness and yet look at all the energy I just wasted telling you about it).

The Easter Bonnet Parade is a NYC tradition dating back to sometime in the 1870s.  Today’s parade can be described in many ways, closest I get?  It is the PG version of the Village Halloween Parade with flowers, eggs and rabbits thrown in for the season. The best part?  It is largely unorganized, even its beginning was a spontaneous event.

It is one of those times in NY when you are free to be exactly who you want and show it off for all the world to see (well, yes,  that is every day but usually you stick out in the crowd). Commonalities throughout the years tend to be dressed up dogs, groups of friends with themed hats and always babies and toddlers.  I think I have a little bit of it all to see.. so here we go:

The ever present Ms. Colombia,  if you have been following my blog you might remember him from the Macy’s Flower Show https://bytegirlphotography.com/2014/03/29/mr-selfridge-would-be-proud-part-2  I have captured him in the past https://www.flickr.com/photos/bytegirl/5130492874  and even from last year’s Easter Parade https://www.flickr.com/photos/bytegirl/8621622075 such a wonderful man and a true staple of every fun NYC event!

Until next year… but I am all for hats being fashion 365 days a year.  I wear one whenever I leave the house and love that more and more others are also.

spring, sprung and the whole crew

It has been a busy few days… so much to come!  Soon to be Easter and NY is egg-cited to be hosting the Big Egg Hunt.  Many hours and many miles later over 100 eggs cracked so far!  But that is not where my mind is tonight,  so instead I give you this photograph with this tidbit.  The man on the far right is a tourist having his picture snapped by his family.

Nothing much beats a beautiful day in New York City.  Whether on an egg hunt or just on a walk through the surreal, spring is the time to be here.

Stay tuned for eggs, lots of eggs…  happy weekend!
