Throughout my life I have had the great fortune of making the acquaintance of a few truly talented people. One of these is Dylan Egon. He is one of the gifts photography has given me.
I have been photographing Dylan’s work in the wild for a few years now.
It was through this photo that I actually met Dylan and his mother, who is now a good friend. But that is a story for another day, a story of New York serendipity with a touch of Santa Fe magic thrown in.
Last night was the opening of Dylan’s newest show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in Chelsea. Entitled ‘American Holy Relics’ it is a great example of the scope of Dylan’s talents. I am not a critic and I don’t always know the right words to explain why and how art touches me but I will attempt a few.
Every piece, every idea is clean, clear and crisp. Perfection on every level. His drawings are sharp and graphic, as well they should be considering he draws with an x acto knife (YES an X ACTO KNIFE). The sharpness translates to a bold, pop in your face. I love the lines, always the perfect number, no extra or out of the way. His assemblages takes the often mundane and elevates it by accentuating clean lines and smooth surfaces. And I love the message, the turning of icons and the slight twist to show that maybe there is something deeper, a puzzle hidden in our culture of excess.

Congratulations to Dylan. It was a crowded and seemed to be quite a well received opening. I look forward to reading reviews in the upcoming days.
